Dear Sir or Madam,

There is plenty going on in the area of renewable energy: Germany has reached its goals laid out as part of the Kyoto Protocol, but the market still has great potential; markets for electromobility are on the rise and may feature some new subsidies in the near future.

Please read on with best regards from your Energy-Server Team!

Power production with geothermal heat

source: pixelio.de

The regional energy provider Überlandwerk in Groß-Gerau (Hesse/Germany) will begin an analysis of a nearly 340 square kilometer area in February. The power plant should begin operations in 2013 and use energy from deep within the Earth. The exact location best suited is still being looked for. Investments for the project are estimated to be at around 35 million euros. The plant will provide power for 7200 homes and will also produce heat for district heating.

More and more communities are using geothermal heat as a decentralized energy source. In Baden-Württemberg, geothermal energy will also be used more as an energy source in the future. The Ministry of the Environment of Baden-Württemberg is presenting a conference on the topic of Deep Geothermal Energy in Focus – Chances, Risks, Solutions.

Germany has reached its Kyoto climate goals

Germany already fulfilled its environmental protection commitments laid out the Kyoto Protocol by 2008. At the end of 2008, Germany had reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 22.2 percent in comparison to 1990. On Monday, the UBA (Federal Enviroment Agency) released the “Inventory Report 2010”. Germany has agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 21 percent of 1990 levels between 2008 and 2010. Federal Minister of the Environment Norber Röttgen (CDU) stated, “The repeated achievement of the Kyoto goals is a good signal.” By 2007, Germany had already exceeded the goals laid out by Kyoto. However, Röttgen also noted, “We still have only gone half of the way we need to go over the next ten years.” By 2020, Germany has agreed to reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent of 1990 levels.

Energy providers call for subsidies for electric cars

The energy providers RWE, E.ON and Vattenfall are calling on states to clarify their subsidy policies for electromobility before they invest billions in the necessary infrastructure. The construction of an extensive network would only be worth the effort if there is a reasonable number of electric vehicles on the roads in Germany. “We need clarity soon as to how electromobility will be subsidized if we are going to help promote this new technology,” says Carolin Reichert, manager of the RWE branch in charge of electromobility. “If there is no financial support in Germany, the automobile manufacturers will bring their products out in markets where such support is in place.” Germany is looking to bring one million electric vehicles onto the streets by 2020, but has not yet decided on any subsidy programs. This will be one of the topics discussed at a high-level meeting on electromobility in the German Chancellery. As long as the energy companies are not expanding the necessary infrastructure, the market will remain unattractive for manufacturers.

The 1st Network Forum on Electromobility which will take place on February 25th in the Messe Stuttgart will provide an information platform offering an overview of the current state of the development of electromobility. Further information is available at www.cep-expo.com.

“IBEF® - International Business Exchange Forum” - Portugal

As part of the CEP® CLEAN ENERGY & PASSIVEHOUSE 2010, International Trade Fair for Renewable Energy and Passive House, the first “IBEF® - International Business Exchange Forum” - Portugal will take place on February 25th. Portugal has agreed to increase the portion of renewable energies to 20 percent by 2020. There are several laws, regulations and incentive programs surrounding the area of renewable energy. A new law subsidizing small power plants offers particularly enticing business opportunities, since the regulations cover the integration of the power into the grid and the compensation paid. Private investors in particular are encouraged to invest in wind energy, photovoltaics, geothermal power, biogas, biomass and hydro power. Solarthermal systems in buildings are also required by the new law. The forum presents the Portuguese energy market, its conditions and market opportunities and encourages contacts to be made between Portuguese public officials, ministries, offices, experts and German companies.
