Renewable Energy Research Association (FVEE): It’s all in the name

The “Solar Energy Research Association” (ForschungsVerbund Sonnenenergie, FVS) has changed its name to “Renewable Energy Research Association” (ForschungsVerbund Erneuerbare Energien). With the name change, one should be able to tell that the participating research institutes are active in all areas of renewable energy. The FVEE’s strategic goal is to gather insights, technologies, and methods is order to be able to develop into a central pillar for sustainable energy. With nearly 1600 employees, FVEE represents nearly 80 % of the research capacity for renewable energy in Germany.

Solar energy from the pipes

The Californian company Solyndra Inc. is introducing innovative thin-film, cylindrical PM-modules to the German market. The thin-film PV-system is composed of cylindrical modules, which capture more sunlight as compared to a conventional PV-system. It was especially designed for flat or less adequate roofs and can be installed quickly. With the establishment of its office in Holzkirchen near Munich, Solyndra strengthens its position in Europe. The Solyndra modules have complete certification for solar plants in Europe as well as GSE-certification for the Italian feed-in tariff system. The Fraunhofer-Institute ISE in Freiburg delivered an independent certification for the Solyandra-PV system’s energy output performance and compared it with field research from many different international facilities. The institute also develops independent, precise prognoses for calculation the energy output performance of the Solyndra systems upon request.

“BEN”: Ways for sustainable biomass use in European regions

The Fraunhofer UMSICHT coordinated the EU-project »BEN« Bioenergy register for sustainable site development in European regions – which takes place every three years. The goal of the project is to facilitate the sustainable use of the biomass energy source. Italy, Great Britain, Poland, Austria, and Germany are all participating in the project. »BEN« is also developing a user-friendly planning tool, the biomass cadastre, which shows the regional energy savings and the regional biomass potential for the respective region. The local available data are transferred into an Internet-based Geo-Information System (GIS). By doing this, a master plan for sustainable energy use can be developed. The implementation will be supported by guidelines for manage-ment, technology, and finance instruments.

New Federal Office for energy Efficiency at BAFA

The directive 2006/32/EG of the Europe Union for end-use efficiency and energy services, sets forth that an agency has to be named in every member country that is en-tirely responsible for overseeing the achievement of the goals stated in the specified directive. As the responsible department in Germany, the Federal Ministry of Economics established a new Federal Agency for Energy Efficiency in the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control. The coming into effect of the planned energy efficiency law should also be legally positioned. The Federal Agency in BAFA is responsible in particular for calculating the national energy saving guidelines as well as controlling the extent of its fulfillment. It evaluates the measures that lead to energy savings and is responsible for the market participant’s information. The Federal Agency works closely with the German Energy Agency.
